Who We Are:
The Center for Justice & Democracy, established in January 1998, is the only national consumer rights organization dedicated exclusively to fighting attacks on the civil justice system and educating the public, lawmakers and the media about the important work of trial attorneys. We rely on the support of individual members to exist.
Our Mission:
We are working to stop laws that restrict victims’ rights; to preserve and improve consumers’ access to the civil courts; to increase corporate, professional and governmental accountability through the civil justice system; and to create renewed respect for trial lawyers and their work.
Our Solutions:
CJ&D is working to create a focused consumer opposition movement to assaults on the U.S. civil justice system; to connect civil justice issues to resonant populist issues; to counter the media’s misinformed coverage of civil justice issues. Here are some of our recent activities:
- Groundbreaking research that is redefining the debate over "tort reform." CJ&D produces breakthrough studies, fact sheets and other materials including The Eight Biggest Myths about Medical Malpractice - and How to Respond; The CALA Files: The Secret Campaign by Big Tobacco and Other Industries to Take Away Your Rights; Lifesavers: CJ&D's Guide to Lawsuits that Protect Us All; and Restoring Shattered Lives: A Primer on War, Terrorism and the U.S. Civil Justice System. These and other studies are distributed to opinion leaders, public officials, journalists and organizations around the country and are used as the basis for advocacy and public education nationwide. They are available free of charge to all CJ&D members.
- Building state-based organizations fighting to protect the civil justice system. Attacks on a state's civil justice system can range from overturning one specific aspect of the state's common law, to a complete overhaul of its tort law, to attacks on judges who have issued decisions defending the civil justice system. Depending on the kind of activity a state faces, CJ&D offers a variety of services, from acting as a central clearinghouse for key information, to working with local organizers to develop state-specific strategies, to actually establishing a statewide office.
- Media. CJ&D has defended the civil justice system on news programs on CBS, ABC, NBC, PBS, CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, CNBC, C-Span, NPR as well as numerous radio programs around the country. We have been quoted in countless newspapers nationwide, including the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, and the Miami Herald. Please see the “CJ&D In the News” Feature on our web site, http://centerjd.org.
- Testimony. CJ&D frequently testifies in Congress and before state legislative bodies.
- Coalitions. CJ&D created Americans for Insurance Reform (AIR), the nation’s largest consumer coalition advocating insurance industry reforms, which now includes over 100 groups. AIR’s web site is: http://insurance-reform-org.
- Academic. CJ&D established the “Civil Justice Resource Group” (CJRG), a group of over twenty scholars from law and graduate schools around the country formed to respond to the widespread disinformation campaign by critics of the civil justice system. CJRG has its own web site, http://cjrg.com.
