Who We Are:
The Center for Justice & Democracy - Illinois (CJ&D-IL), established in January 2005, is the only statewide consumer rights organization dedicated exclusively to fighting attacks on the civil justice system and educating the public, lawmakers and the media about the important work of trial attorneys.

Our Mission:
We are working to stop laws that restrict victims’ rights; to preserve and improve consumers’ access to the civil courts; to increase corporate, professional and governmental accountability through the civil justice system; and to create renewed respect for trial lawyers and their work.

Our Solutions:
CJ&D is working to create a focused consumer opposition movement to assaults on Illinois’ civil justice system; to connect civil justice issues to resonant populist issues; to counter the media’s misinformed coverage of civil justice issues.  Here are some of our recent activities:

  1. Grassroots organizing, advocacy and coalition building.  CJ&D is the central galvanizing force within Illinois behind a new broad coalition of labor, community, and civil rights groups to defeat the anti-consumer “tort reform” agenda.
  2. Client Organizing/lobbying. CJ&D has organized the largest statewide network of victims of medical malpractice and corporate wrongdoing in the country, which is CJ&D’s activist core.  Members have testified in Springfield, spoken to the media, and lobbied legislators.
  3. Information distribution and media efforts.  CJ&D’s staff works closely with reporters and editorial boards around the state, has written numerous opinion pieces, organized frequent press conferences and has published many important studies and Fact Sheets, all of which can be found on http://centerjd.org/Illinois.htm.
  4. Government relations. CJ&D has responded to numerous requests from lawmakers, provided legislators and their staff with extensive information and testified many times in Springfield.
